چکیده

The problem of stKial choice has challenged stKial philosophers and political scientists for centuries. The fundamental decision-making dilemma for groups is how to turn individual preferences for different outcomes into a single choice for the group as a whole. This problem has been studied mainly with respect to human groups, which ha\'e developed a variety of voting procedures to single out one option from a list of possible choices: majority rule, plurality wins, various weighted-voting systems and others. Social choice in animal groups is less well studied, although examples are abundant: A babixm troop must decide where to go following a rest peritxi; an ant colony decides whether or not to attack a neighboring colony.

Moving without a purpose: an experimental study of swarm guidance in the Western honey bee, Apis mellifera.

During reproductive swarming, honey bee scouts perform two very important functions. Firstly, they find new nesting locations and return to the swarm cluster to communicate their discoveries. Secondly, once the swarm is ready to depart, informed scout bees act as guides, leading the swarm to its final destination. We have previously hypothesised that the two processes, selecting a new nest site...

Honey Bee Swarm Cognition: Decision-Making Performance and Adaptation

A synthesis of findings from neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral biology has been recently used to show that several key features of cognition in neuron-based brains of vertebrates are also present in bee-based swarms of honey bees. Here, simulation tests are administered to the honey bee swarm cognition system to study its decision-making performance. First, tests are used to evaluate the...

The vibration signal, modulatory communication and the organization of labor in honey bees, Apis mellifera

Cooperative activities in honey bee colonies involve the coordinated interactions of multiple workers that perform different, but interrelated tasks. A central objective in the study of honey bee sociality therefore is to understand the communication signals used to integrate behavior within and among worker groups. This paper focuses on the role of the “vibration signal” in organizing labor in...

Genetic diversity in honey bee colonies enhances productivity and fitness.

Honey bee queens mate with many males, creating numerous patrilines within colonies that are genetically distinct. The effects of genetic diversity on colony productivity and long-term fitness are unknown. We show that swarms from genetically diverse colonies (15 patrilines per colony) founded new colonies faster than swarms from genetically uniform colonies (1 patriline per colony). Accumulate...
